Simon Black, in the view of this site, is the greatest ever Brisbane Lion even ahead of champions such as two of his former captains in Michael Voss and Jonathan Brown. However, unlike Voss and Brown, two other cornerstones of Brisbane's legendary three-peat of flags between 2001 and 2003, Black has not been inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame. However, despite being eligible this is not due to an oversight from the selection panel.
Earlier this year, AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan personally called Simon Black to tell him the good news and invited Black to attend the 2019 Australian Football Hall of Fame dinner as an inductee. However, Black was forced to knock back this invitation as at the time of the June dinner he would be away filming for the reality TV show, Australian Survivor. And thus, Black added another first to his incredible CV.
Along with being the first player in Australian Football history to win a premiership (of which he has done three times), play 300 VFL/AFL games and be awarded a Norm Smith - he is also the first footballer to miss a Hall of Fame induction due to a reality TV show. Although, we suspect that Black will head up the list of next year's inductees.
SIMON BLACK'S RECORD - Voted Brisbane Lions player of the decade (2007-2016)
- Three time premiership player (2001-2003)
- Brownlow Medal (2002)
- Norm Smith Medal (2003)
- Three time All Australian (2001-2002 and 2004)
- Three time Best and Fairest (2001-2002 and 2006)
- Brisbane Captain (2007-2008)
- 322 games for Brisbane Lions - Record
